‘Holly Willoughby is right, we should prioritise making time for ourselves’

Three weeks into the new year and, if you’re feeling anything like me, those bold and determined resolutions we made must all seem a dim and distant memory.

Wishing anyone I haven’t seen since the start of January a Happy New Year feels like a stretch, especially as supermarket shelves are already laden with chocolate eggs for an Easter that isn’t until April. They don’t waste time do they?

The start-of-the-year glow seems to have faded for many of us as we quickly fall into our old routines – back to work, school run, self-isolating, zoom meetings, among other things.

So it was perhaps a timely reminder to hear This Morning host Holly Willoughby this week talking about the importance of trying to find more “me time”.

Speaking on a podcast with Emma Bunton, the TV presenter confessed she had been “utterly useless” when it came to making time for herself.

“The traditional way of motherhood is you have a child and dedicate your entire life to that child,” she said. “I think women of today try to balance things. We want to carve out a part of our lives for us.”

Similarly, Lorraine Kelly this week urged viewers to spend five to 10 minutes per day on me time.

But how often do we remember to do so?

I know “me time” is increasingly going to the bottom rather than the top of my ever-expanding to-do list.

Speaking to a friend and mother in the park – we were out there in the cold as our kids had demanded to go – she told me she couldn’t believe it when her partner criticised her for making time to meet her friend for a Saturday morning coffee when there was a list as long as her arm of things to still do around the house.

After giving him what for, she reminded him that, like everyone else in her house, she needed time for herself.

It’s something that is too often forgotten, especially for working mums, but it’s more important than ever especially during the pandemic as working from home, despite its benefits, often means more work and taking fewer breaks.

So, before the end of the month, I’ll take a leaf out of Lorraine’s book and find time for myself. Her advice to “be kind to yourself” is spot on.
